7-18-06 Boone Hall Plantation

When we woke up and went to the restaurant for breakfast in Charleston, we decided then that we were going to have to severely limit the amount of food we ordered. All food and plates in the south is giant. As would we be soon if we weren't careful. We had eggs, grits, biscuits and gravy, coffee, sweet tea and texas toast. We drove around like yesterday and saw the old historic homes. So neat. Then we drove to an Antebellum plantation called Boone Hill Plantation just outside of Charleston. There was a woman on the side of the road selling sea grass baskets she was making in the old Gullah-style. We bought a small one, it's so beautiful. The Boone Hall Plantation has been growing and producing crops for over 320 years. One of their exports was brick from the clay underneath the adjoining river, so the slave quarters were sturdy and 9 of the 27 have survived since post-revolutionary war days. It also had a two rows of live oaks on the approaching row, all covered with spanish moss. Beautiful. Then we drove back down through Savannah. Stephanie jumped out of the car and snapped some more photographs at the Bonaventure Cemetary. Then we drove down, just over the Florida border, to Neptune Beach and flopped onto our beds and passed out.

Love love love you blog, Jodie! What is the story of that first picture in this post? What is texas toast? I wish I were on this trip with you--it sounds great!

That house is just one of hundreds we've seen and Stephanie has photographed. I guess texas toast is just another excuse for huge servings of food. It was bread sliced about 3 times too thick and toasted.
It's just been the most amazing trip!

My favorite line in this whole blog is in the post you wrote about the Mexican market, when you were waiting for your number to be called in Spanish:

"Like really stressful bingo."

This just cracks me up and I can't stop thinking about it.
