Okay, we got on the road and had to get back off to get a photo of our first alligator. 13 feet. It was stuffed, though. At a gas station, looking exactly like the 10 other stuffed alligators we would see at gas stations throughout Florida. I'm grateful for our low excitement threshold.
We happened upon a town called St. Augustine. There was a sign that said, "The oldest house in the United States." Fred flung us off the highway. At least it wasn't a giant ball of twine or something.
St. Augustine is the port where Ponce de Leon decided he had discovered the Fountain of Youth. So it has been a spa town for hundreds of years. It was a pretty neat town, well preserved and easy to walk through. Even though it was over 100 degrees and 85% humidity.

There was this really cool park that had about 8 houses that were built very close together by the same extended family over 200 years ago. All of these buildings have lived through the hurricanes, storms and rebuilding in Florida. Fred very much liked the idea of building houses next to his for his daughters and other family members to move into, then building a big hurricane-proof wall around us.
