7-24-06 Mobile AL to New Orleans LA
Now, we woke up in Mobile, Alabama, enjoyed all the views along the delta and then everything just started to fall apart on each side of the road. The closer we got to Biloxi, Missippi, the more everything and everything was just gone. We'd seen some damage from Hurricane Katrina along the way, but it had been a year and so far almost everything had been cleaned up. Until we pulled up to Biloxi and the Missippi coast. This picture is a hotel, not even a fence around it, with the curtains still blowing out of opened and broken windows. We have many, many pictures of this day, but I can't stand to look at them too much. It was so sad.
So many homes were totally demolished, there were entire neighborhoods made up of just trailers on flattened lots.
Even when we got to Louisiana, all the way into New Orleans, there were only ghost towns and neglect. No one could just go buy materials and rebuild. There wasn't anyone there anymore. And the people who stayed (or came back), were, frankly, really rough. At least the few we saw. We kept going until we got to the French Quarter and our wonderfully plush five-star empty hotel. I would say it was 10 to 25 percent occupied.
